Apifarma was founded in 1975, succeeding the National Association of Pharmaceutical Specialities Industries, an institution created in 1939.
Today, Apifarma represents around 140 companies active in the Production and Import of Pharmaceutical Specialities for Human and Veterinary Use, Serums, Vaccines, Active Substances for Use in Medicines and Diagnostic Devices. The provision of services to member companies covers all multi-disciplinary fields relevant to the sector.
Apifarma has an Executive Director and three complementary departments:
1. The Executive Director's duties include representing Apifarma at European institutions and government agencies that are responsible for the medicinal products sector, associated organisations and other national and International health sector partners.
2. The Technical Department is responsible for providing economic, financial, pharmaceutical and professional training services;
3. The Communications and External Affairs Department promotes the image and views of the Pharmaceutical Industry to the media, patient groups, opinion leaders and the public In general.
4. The Legal Department is responsible for providing services in the areas of pharmaceutical, social, employment, administrative and deontological legislation.
